ABOUT
ABOUT
Jitan is a developing artist and goldsmith, exploring drawing and engraving across physical and digital media, through a practice centred on the hand, the mark and the material.
The current focus is on developing the foundations of making across physical and digital media, alongside the study and practice of engraving.
Different media bring different relationships between hand, material, mark and process.
The work explores drawing, observation, line, surface, form and material — from direct work on physical surfaces to digital tools and processes.
Current Areas of Practice
Physical Media
Exploring drawing and mark-making through physical materials, with an emphasis on line, tone, surface, form and observation.
Digital Media
Exploring digital drawing, image-making and other processes as complementary ways of developing ideas and working with line, form and composition.
Engraving
Learning to translate drawing into the physical surface of metal through line, pressure and repetition.
The Approach
The aim is not to work towards a particular style as quickly as possible, but to develop the underlying skills and understanding that allow the work to find its own direction.
The different approaches provide different ways of seeing and making. Drawing provides a foundation; engraving introduces the physical resistance of materials; digital media provide other ways to explore, develop and refine ideas.
The practice will evolve as these foundations develop.
Musings
Alongside the work, I use this site to record things I am reading, learning and thinking about.
These notes may range from art, drawing and making to ideas from other fields that influence how I think about projects, processes and problem-solving.
Some of these interests come from outside the studio — including books, ideas and approaches encountered through my work in project management. They are included here as part of the wider process of learning and exploring, rather than as a separate professional blog.
This site documents that development — the experiments, the learning, the developing work and the process of making it.
